The Collegiate Church of St Peter which is situated at Westminster is commonly yclept as Westminster Abbey. Traditionally, this burial site stands for upholding the English monarchs of the Commonwealth Realms. In abridge form, It detained the dignity of a cathedral from the regime of 1546 to1556, and obviously the formation of a Royal Peculiar .Westminster Abbey was founded by dint of the Royal charter in 1560 which shaped it as the collegiate church of St Peter Westminster and provided the Royal consistency under the delicate authority of the Rex. It has unique history and tradition about its origin. In connection with the report by Sulcard in about 1080, the Abbey was primarily established at the regime of Mellitus (d. 624) who acted as the Bishop of London on that time the present site was identified as Thorn Ey (Thorn Island); rooted on a tardy 'convention' that a fisherman called 'Aldrich ' on the River Thames noticed a vision of Saint Peter closed to the ambience. This deems to be noted down to rationalize the assistance of salmon from Thames fishermen that the Abbey accepted in following years. The actualized myths are that in the 960s or early 970s, Monk Dunstan lodged a community of Benedictine monks here. After happening that numerous incidents have been taken place on the basis of it. Subsequently, it was re constructed by Henry III from 1245, who had choosed the place for his burial. Basically the history of Westminister Abbey launched from here.

This Abbey, along with St. Paul's cathedral are the most famous churches in London. I have been to Westminster Abbey twice, and thoroughly enjoyed my visit each time. The Abbey is so rich in history that each time you go you are bound to notice something that you didn't notice before. My favorite part is seeing how Queen Mary Tudor is buried beneath her arch enemy Queen Elizabeth I!!!

I would highly recommend paying for the audio tour, which comes free with the purchase of an admission ticket. The audio guides come in many languages including: German, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Portugese, Polish, Hungarian, Mandarin Chinese, and Japanese. THe English audio guide has the Jeremy Irons, the oscar winning actor, taking you through the Abbey! There are also guided tours, which I'm sure are interesting as well but I have never done one so I cannot say for sure.

This place takes a while to get through, so be sure to leave yourself plenty of time and wear good shoes! I believe they have benches scattered about so you can rest if you aren't good on your feet for too long.

Admission is 12 pounds for adults, and 9 pounds for children under 16 and Students. There are also special packages for families.
